Back in 2015, Tome Of The Unreplenished sounded different. It isn’t that much of a change but the Cypriot born now British band’s debut was much more geared towards atmospheric black metal that frayed at the edges of concrete. Cosmoprism: The Theurgy – Act I shatters all bonds with the material world and travels towards the celestial nothingness with an EP that attempts to fathom the unknowable and reign in the horror of the indescribable. This, of course, will not be done in 4/4 time or with any sort of musical structure.

Grave Plague – The Infected Crypts [US, Death] (2017)

It is interesting that the label / distribution company made mention of the innumerable old school death metal acts as of late when introducing US based Grave Plague. It is almost as if the novelty of playing old school death metal has been noted and is starting to turn sour. If you would have told me I would get tired of kick ass riffs and colorful imagery like grave plagues and infected crypts, I would have called you crazy. Listen, I understand there could be some people who would tire of relentless music that sounds like heavy tombstones thrown into the hillside but I am not at that point yet.

Svangur Kvöl – Wreck Of The World [Australia, Black] (2017)

Coming across a band like Svangur Kvöl happens completely by chance. A debut album by a what could be a one person black metal self released project can be hard to keep track of. I think it was the cover and the fact that this album has been made into atleast 6 tapes, which drew my attention. Now that I have it, I am mesmerized by the call of the weird frontier.

No matter how hard I try, there is always something I miss. 2016 was a great time for heavy metal as well as the year that W released three albums and 1 EP. I do not know why I am just learning about this but let us use the dawn of 2017 to get acquainted with a great black metal project that is buried under six feet of snow.
