Look at all this room I have to stretch my legs. Oh goodness. Look at this space I have for intros, interludes, and outros. Holy shit. Whenever I see track lengths which range in the 10, 15, and 20 minute lengths I immediately look to see if it is stoner doom. If it is not then my interest is aroused since things like black and death metal make for engaging compositions given the longer format. I also make sure it is not atmospheric black metal before continuing further. Oh my, but when the track lengths are long and they contain some deeply rooted orthodox Grecian black metal, I must say that my heart skips a beat.

Ugh. This album is totally going to clash with the rest of this site and the grey/black album art aesthetic. Sure. Why not just pick the brightest colors for this release which sort of adds to the chaotic madness which lies at the very heart of this record? Fucking go for it. Genevieve is from Maryland and is supported by Grimoire Records, which if you were not aware, showcases some of the weirder and off kilter metal bands who are trying really hard to keep their shit together at parties but its hard with all the acid they took.

Grave Ritual – Morbid Throne [US, Death] (2015)

Dark Descent | 10-30-15

So in the the mid 90’s this band from Alabam was known as Metahole Infection and played a particulary splatteryly variety odf death metal. It should be noted that the music from MEtahole Infection and Grave Ritual is not that different aside from some new atmopshere, slower tempo and perhaps a new drummer. What is important to realize is that framing and presentation can make a world of difference as Grave Ritual’s dedication to less bloody and more forbodding themes puts their music on the right track for success.

I will give you 10$ if you can spell both the name and album name without mixing up the letters. The band’s name translates or means coniferous crown which is an imagery which is fitting to a dense brand of nature conscious black metal. If you have ever been traveling through the wilderness of Finland you might have encountered a forest creature veiled in the regal outfits of the woodland which may or may not be last thing you see.

Self Released | 9-1-15

This is the power of advertising to different audiences. Conceptarium was self released at the beginning of September with a polished sci fi cover and a shining font choice. The original cover certainly fit the atmosphere for this cosmic black death outfit. The cassette cover produced by MITHRA! Infrastructure / Infrasound however is flatter and with only a black/white balance, the astral themes appear more occult. It is funny how the same music can have two different covers and sound somewhat different. I prefer the cassette occult.

That is it. I officially want to just slow down 2015 in terms of decent black metal releases until deal with everything that is on my desk. If you have kept up at all with Fallen Empire, Dark Descent, Iron Bonehead, and Hells Headbangers, the amount of good music that one has to get through just in the last couple of months is almost insurmountable. Then Shrine of Insanabilis comes along and without any demos or EPs to their name, they release a dense full length which is fully mature as well a vicious killer.

Nechochwen – Heart of Akamon [US, Black / Folk] (2015)

Birdrune Records | 9-4-15

Nechochwen is interesting for many reasons. First of all it takes a little bit just to pronounce their name correctly. Secondly, they are a black metal band who have whole heatedly thrown themselves into the plights and history of Native American lore. Thirdly, they take a folk approach to their music with acoustic instrumentals, war sounds, and searing black metal thrown into a fire. American folk metal is a long time coming and details are still being hammered and tinkered with.

Iron Bonehead | 8-28-15

It was only after admiring the cover for Creeping that I soon stumbled into a weird and tangled web of New Zealand based extreme metal. Creeping’s cover was made by handyman Jamie Saint Merat who not only plays drums for Ulcerate but also did design/sound for a bunch of related bands including Abystic Ritual and The House of Capricorn. Those two bands are sort of the two parts which make up Creeping. If a voucher from Iron Bonehead is not assurance for this band’s third full length is not enough, then put your trust in New Zealand’s ability to make no nonsense darkness.

Oh Dear. Germany’s Thurm lies on the border between many different genres and directions. While there is certainly different pulls towards screamo, black metal, hardcore, and noise, all of these coalesce into a big cartoon ball of fighting which eventually drops off a comically large cliff. The subsequent tumble and hellish aftermath is where Thurm really shines. somewhere between madness and understanding lies a fantastic debut from an unknown four piece.

Self Mutilation Services | 6-16-15

It is fitting that Inhumane Minimalism, the second record from Grecian black metal duo Human Serpent begins with almost no fanfare. In fact, “The World In Coffins” starts almost immediately almost with disdain that you were not already listening. This immediacy is a corner stoner of a record which wastes little time getting down to business. This business maybe a systematic and visceral dissection of hope and happiness.
