Convulsing was a surprise this year for many reasons. First of all it came out of nowhere and second of all, this is the first release from an otherwise unknown solo artist from Australia. With a lot of things working against Convulsing, the artists debut is a furious take on black / death with both grooves and horrid abstractions.
Maltheist – Maltheist [US, Death / Grind] (2016)
StandardI am actually getting sort of mad at the West Coast for having such a gnarly scene of disgusting black and death metal. Out of left field comes another act with little information a loud bite. Where are all of these bands coming from? Do they all Maltheist is from Portland Oregon and their 11 track demo has the consistency of gasoline igniting in a glass bottle.
A.S.M. – DEMO 2016 [US, Black / Death] (2016)
StandardI get incredulous when things like this pass me by or atleast someone else clues me into its existence. Add to this the fact this band is in the same state as me and the fact that they have an unmistakable album cover plus being a demo and I start to wonder how many other things I have missed out on.
Commander – Apocalypse Vengeance [Canada, Black] (2016)
StandardReplication is flattery when a band is completely honest about their intentions. Mikey Witchfucker, the one man central command for this Canadian outfit has already listed bands like Blasphemy and Beherit as major sources of information. With a demo that doesn’t even reach the 10 minute mark, let us see how crazy we can get.
Obscure Evil – Void Fumes [Peru, Black / Thrash] (2016)
StandardA couple of friends and I have contests to see who can mine the best music out of the field of brand new releases. I feel that checking back to Caligari records every so often is cheating since this label has been known to already have a good system which finds the most vile and fiery bands from across the globe. Enter Obscure Evil whose previous 2016 demo was enough to take notice but the band’s new EP is something to behold.
Black Citadel – Ancestral Shadows [US, Raw Black] (2016)
StandardIn chaos, there is rest. Black Citadel is a US based black metal band and I usually spend my time here introducing the information related to the band or perhaps the lack there of. Black Citadel is one of those bands where the music takes up most of the talking points. Ancestral Shadows is the second release this year for the band which is strapped together with a two song EP released earlier this year. We are just going to assume this is the debut demo for a band that has a lot of mystery attached to its name.
Burial Ground – End of the World [Russia, Black / Speed] (2016)
StandardSo even though this particular demo only runs three tracks, I would like to talk about Burial Ground’s body of work as we start to wind down in 2016. Burial Ground is interesting for the sheer volume of work that is put out. Looking at all of the demos which are available for 2016, an entire full length of black / speed could be available for people. Right now it is just spread out across multiple releases each with their own grim artwork.
Mortals Path – Mortals Path [Germany, Death] (2016)
StandardAll Hail the sound of tombs cracking from a force wishing to resurrect. Mortal’s Path is from Germany and this group of newcomers does its very best to slide right into the death metal party. From their jagged logo to the black and white cover, Mortals Path tries its very hardest to just be a standard death metal demo without many bells and whistles. Because of this, Mortals Path presents a very humble offering of death metal which sounds like a cemetery rupturing.
Papa Necrose – Culto a Morte [Brazil, Death] (2016)
StandardDeath! Death! Death! Papa Necrose is not on Metal Archives as of yet so finding any relevant information is difficult save for their Facebook page. This is odd since the sound and style of this Brazilian death metal band is 10/10 across the board in terms of crushing entertainment.
Spektral Hatchery – Spektral Hatchery [US, Black] (2016)
StandardThe Pacific Northewest is always a place where I like to keep my ear out for up and coming bands. Since the fall out of the Cascadian wave which sort of overtook this area, there have been great developments in black metal which do not rely on album covers with trees and waterfalls. Spektral Hatchery is another wonderful band out of Washington which explores the atmosphere of black metal in hypnotic dissonance.
