Grave Plague – The Infected Crypts [US, Death] (2017)

Self Released | 01-13-17

It is interesting that the label / distribution company made mention of the innumerable old school death metal acts as of late when introducing US based Grave Plague. It is almost as if the novelty of playing old school death metal has been noted and is starting to turn sour. If you would have told me I would get tired of kick ass riffs and colorful imagery like grave plagues and infected crypts, I would have called you crazy. Listen, I understand there could be some people who would tire of relentless music that sounds like heavy tombstones thrown into the hillside but I am not at that point yet.

Svangur Kvöl – Wreck Of The World [Australia, Black] (2017)

Coming across a band like Svangur Kvöl happens completely by chance. A debut album by a what could be a one person black metal self released project can be hard to keep track of. I think it was the cover and the fact that this album has been made into atleast 6 tapes, which drew my attention. Now that I have it, I am mesmerized by the call of the weird frontier.

No matter how hard I try, there is always something I miss. 2016 was a great time for heavy metal as well as the year that W released three albums and 1 EP. I do not know why I am just learning about this but let us use the dawn of 2017 to get acquainted with a great black metal project that is buried under six feet of snow.

Happy 2017 everyone. Though it is only 10 days into the year, this is a good of time as any to start digging into lesser known releases for the year. First up is a band that I legitimately can not find any information regarding aside from their Bandcamp page. You know the drill. Pull the blankets your to your face.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Sulphurous has been around for a few years but this is another example of a band who is taking their time. With their third demo released in September of this year, the Denmark based death metal band has three releases to their name with a 7 inch reprint of their most recent demo. It is alright. I can wait. We can all be patient for this type of music. I know you can wait.

All Hail the sound of tombs cracking from a force wishing to resurrect. Mortal’s Path is from Germany and this group of newcomers does its very best to slide right into the death metal party. From their jagged logo to the black and white cover, Mortals Path tries its very hardest to just be a standard death metal demo without many bells and whistles. Because of this, Mortals Path presents a very humble offering of death metal which sounds like a cemetery rupturing.

I have a running joke with some of my friends on which of us can find the most inaccessible band with little information available on the internet. I think I win at least for today. I do not know a lot about this band but what I can tell you about this release is that it is from France, made by two people, and is frightening as hell.

Attic Age | 1-26-16

True Love is a misleading name which ranks up there with Happy Days and Lifelover for metal band names. Atleast the cover for Meditating Through Illusion isn’t misleading at the stark black and white composition of the tape cover partially conveys the horror which is contained within.

Black metal being played in 2016 is nothing new. In fact,I feel this blog wouldn’t exist if it were not for this fact. Void Omina plays black metal and are from the United States. Again, this is nothing new. In fact, there is nothing really remarkable about Void Omina, on the surface, that would separate them from everything else. Besides a brightly colored album art with space things, this is just black metal played with fierce precision from five guys from Oakland California. Maybe that is why it is receiving a substantial following from people.

Wow. Careful now. Don’t burn yourself on how new this is. Put it down. It is too hot. This release is almost 24 hours old and as of right now it has no other points of contact other than the few bits of information. All we have to go on is that Draped Urn is from Brazil and the sound is fucking ferocious.
